Moxibustion or Moxa as it is sometimes called, is a Traditional Chinese Medicine technique that involves the burning of the herb mugwort, also known as artemesia vulgaris, to facilitate healing. It is used as part of an acupuncture treatment. The purpose of moxibustion, is to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of qi (energy), expel cold, warm the channels or meridans and maintain general health.
Moxa can be placed directly on an acupuncture point or the herb is burned near the point using a lighted moxa stick, it can also be placed on a needle. The sensation created by moxa is a pleasant heating sensation that penetrates deep into the skin and muscle.
